Since 1990

Compliance is the product. Everything else is logistics.

Health Research Systems has administered workplace drug and alcohol testing programs from Huntington, West Virginia for thirty-five years.

A West Virginia company, incorporated December 20, 1990

Health Research Systems was incorporated under the laws of West Virginia on December 20, 1990 and opened for business on January 1, 1991. Thirty-five years later we are still here, still run by the family that started it, and still doing the same work.

We are a third-party administrator, and that distinction matters. We do not simply collect a specimen and send you a result. We administer the entire program — policy development, random pool management, chain of custody, Medical Review Officer review, DOT compliance, and the documentation you need on the day a regulator asks for it.

What we do

Six service lines, all of them built around one thing: keeping your program defensible.

Workplace & DOT drug testing

Office-based and mobile collections across multiple states, performed to SAMHSA guidelines. Urine, hair, oral fluid and alcohol testing, on 5- and 10-panel screens or custom panels.

Third-party administration

Full substance abuse program administration for employers who would otherwise staff the compliance function internally — random selection, pool management, electronic chain of custody and audit support.

Medical Review Officer

A certified MRO reviews results, contacts donors and makes the determination. This is the step that separates a defensible program from a liability.

Substance Abuse Professional

SAP evaluation and return-to-duty support for employees who have violated DOT testing regulations, conducted under 49 CFR Part 40.

Background screening

Pre-employment and ongoing screening packages built around the role rather than a one-size template.

Policy & audit support

Written policy development, program documentation and the records you need when a regulator asks for them.

Why employers stay

We are not the largest administrator in this industry and we do not try to be. We offer two things the national operators struggle to match.

Depth

We run the program, not just the test. Most of our clients came to us because they were buying collections from somebody else and still doing all of the compliance work themselves.

Continuity

Some of our client relationships are older than the compliance managers who now administer them. In a business whose entire product is documentation and defensibility, thirty-five years of unbroken operation is not a marketing line. It is the record.
